Update September 16, 2020

It was reported today in the Review Journal that Google is going to invest an additional $600 million in their Henderson Data Facility, doubling their original budget.

Governor Sisolak did not provide details on what the added Henderson investment would cover. But he noted it would bring the Silicon Valley internet-search giant’s total investment in the project to $1.2 billion.

It hit the Review Journal on Monday that Google held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its Henderson data center. There were always rumors of a new data center coming to Henderson but it was clouded in secrecy. Google acquired the 64-acre site in January 2018 for $19 million and drew up plans for a data center project that would span more than 750,000 square feet, records show. However the buyer of record was not Google. The developer of record was an obscure Delaware-registered entity, Jasmine Development LLC.

My marketing director drove by this location a number of times with no clue who the developer was. He did notice the oversized HVAC coolers and the amount of commercial power going into the location and figured it was a new Switch data center. The image below was taken by Google Earth before construction stared of course.

Even though the press is reporting about the secrecy of the project and tax credits offered to get the project built, I care more about the positive implications of this project. Obviously Google finds value in Henderson, enough to choose this location for the new data center. The construction jobs and the jobs when it launches are a boon to the community. The location is quite secure as it is surrounded by mostly salvage and towing yards.
