For those of you that have never been to Boulder City, it is worth exploring especially if you are looking to buy a house. It has a small town feel with great restaurants and many outdoor activities. It is approximately 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Las Vegas. The town took its name from Boulder Canyon. Boulder City is one of only two places in Nevada that prohibits gambling, the other being the town of Panaca.

In 1979, in response to the growth during that decade, the citizens approved a referendum and instituted a controlled growth ordinance. Due to this unique ordinance, the City limits the number of residential and hotel/motel building permits issued each year to control the rate of growth of the community. Since the inception of the controlled growth ordinance, the growth of the community has been approximately 3% per year.

The City’s vision statement has remained relatively unchanged for the past decade:

“The community of Boulder City is committed to preserving our status as a small town, with small town charm, historic heritage, and unique identity, while proactively addressing our needs and enhancing our quality of life.” 

So basically, it’s a limited growth city, though I call it a small town. You won’t see housing developments, buildings over two stories tall and the downtown area will always maintain it’s small town appeal.

In the center of the city you will find residences that were built during the construction of the Hoover Dam. The city would never allow somebody to come in and tear down one of these historical homes to build something more modern. In the valley leading down to Lake Mead, you will find newer and more extravagant homes with few new construction luxury homes in build at this time.

Boulder City has two municipal golf courses (Boulder City Municipal Golf Course and Boulder Creek Golf Course), one private golf course, a city pool, racquetball complex, lit tennis courts, athletic fields, BMX bicycle track, ample mountain hiking trails, and is only a few miles away from Lake Mead. Nevada’s first airport, Boulder City Municipal Airport, is still in operation today, accommodating private planes, skydiving trips, and scenic aerial tours of Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.
